Loukia Loulaki was born in 1992 in Athens, Greece. She studied cello as a scholarship holder at the Athens Conservatoire and completed her cello degree by the age of 16, passing her final exam with the highest distinction — being awarded the Gold Medal, which had not been given to a cellist since 1915. By that point, she had already won several Greek music competitions.
From 2007 to 2009 she also studied with Prof. Marianne Chen. In June 2008 she was awarded the "Gina Bachauer Prize" in memory of the great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, and at the same time received a scholarship from the "World Harmony Foundation," which was extended for a further year (2009–10).
In March 2007 she went on to study with Prof. Natalia Gutman at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. In September 2010, at the age of 18, she was admitted to the Master's programme of the Vienna Music and Arts Private University (MUK) in the class of Prof. Natalia Gutman, supported by a scholarship from the "Onassis Foundation." She completed these studies with the highest distinction.
Her musical training was further shaped by masterclasses with professors and ensembles including Hatto Beyerle, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Maria Kliegel, Leonidas Kavakos, Alfred Brendel, Menahem Pressler, the Diotima Quartet, the Artis Quartett, Pavel Vernikov, and Vida Vujić.
As a soloist, Loukia Loulaki has appeared with the Athens City Orchestra, the City Orchestra of Thessaloniki, the "Orchestra of Colours," the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, the Junge Philharmonie Wien, the Mödling Symphonic Orchestra, and the Paneuropean Philharmonia. She has also made recordings with the Greek Radio Orchestra (ERT).
She has given recitals and chamber music concerts throughout Europe and in China, Japan, Peru, and Brazil, in concert halls such as the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Grafenegg Festival, the Great Festival Hall of Vienna City Hall, the Haydnhaus Vienna, the Volkstheater Vienna, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Basilica of Sant' Alessandro in Florence, the "Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto," the Mozarteum in São Paulo, the Casa da Música in Porto, the Ghent Festival, and the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, among others.
In March 2012 she won the scholarship of the Tzusuki Foundation and recorded for the ORF at the Radio-Kulturhaus Vienna.
As a very active chamber musician, Loukia Loulaki has performed with numerous renowned artists, including A. Zhulla (Juilliard Quartet), A. Lenaerts (principal harp of the Vienna Philharmonic), R. Giannotti (principal bassoon of the Munich Philharmonic), Mario Hossen, and Gökhan Aybulus, among many others.
As her work as a chamber musician had by then become the main focus of her artistic activity, she decided to broaden her knowledge and expertise in chamber music at the tertiary level. In 2018 she therefore began the Master's programme in Chamber Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW) in the class of Johannes Meissl (Artis Quartett). In 2020, following a nomination by the university, she received the "Sylff Scholarship" of the Tokyo Foundation, and in October 2021 she completed her studies with distinction.
She was a founding member of the "Selini Quartet" (2017–2022). With this ensemble she has performed throughout Europe since 2017, and is, among others, a prizewinner of the "MDW Great Talent Award" (Austria 2021), the "Prague Spring International Music Competition" (Czech Republic 2021), the "Ysaÿe International Music Competition" (Belgium 2021), and the "Szymanowski International Music Competition" (Poland 2018); she also won the "Artis Prize" at the competition of the International Summer Academy of the MDW (ISA, Austria). The ensemble was appointed by a commission of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs as Cultural Ambassadors of Austria for the years 2020–2022 within the NASOM series — joining an international network of cultural forums and embassies in which the quartet has performed regularly.
The quartet worked regularly with Prof. Hatto Beyerle (Alban Berg Quartett) and was also an ensemble of the ECMA (European Chamber Music Academy).
Since September 2022, Loukia Loulaki has been Professor of Cello at the "Amadeus International School Vienna" and the "Amadeus Music and Arts Academy"; since September 2023 she has also been a cello tutor at SUPERAR Vienna.
