Born in 1992 in St. Petersburg, Nikita Gerkusov received his first violin lessons at the age of three and initially completed the Special Music School for Highly Gifted Children in the class of Elena Zaitseva.
He went on to study violin and viola at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. While still a student, he began his international concert career as a soloist and with various chamber music ensembles, which took him across Europe and to the United States. During this period, he performed with musicians such as Alena Baeva, Mark Drobinsky, and Luc Tooten.
Since 2011, Nikita Gerkusov has lived in Central Europe, where he continued his studies with renowned professors including Nathan Braude, Jürgen Kussmaul, and Alexander Zemtsov. Gerkusov is a multiple prize winner at international competitions, among them the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach am Wörthersee and the Ysaÿe International Music Competition in Liège, Belgium.
Following permanent positions as principal viola with the Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg, the orchestra of the Passau Stadttheater, and the Munich Symphony Orchestra, he won the audition with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria in summer 2017 and has served as its principal viola ever since. Alongside his orchestral work, he is a permanent member of the Auner Quartet.
Nikita Gerkusov plays a viola by Giovanni Paolo Maggini, built in Brescia during the early 17th century, on loan from the collection of the Austrian National Bank.
